On October 27, 2007, the acting director of the OECD Development Centre, Javier Santiso, offered a presentation on the relation between fiscal policy and democratic legitimacy in Latin America. The presentation was based on the main conclusions in one of the chapters of the first OECD Latin American Economic Outlook. Research carried out by the OECD Development Centre suggests that improvement by Latin American countries of their fiscal systems and the quality and equity of public spending would have a positive effect on democratic legitimacy in the region.
The Seminar, organised by the Spanish foundation CIDOB, gathered distinguished economist and cademics to discuss the most relevant topics for Latin America's development. This year's edition focused on social cohesion and reform, the main theme of the XVII Iberoamerican Summit (Santiago de Chile, 8-10 November 2007). Different panels examined Latin America's economic situation and advanced policy recommendations on how to improve fiscal, labour, education and health performance throughout the region.
