Belgium: Ambassador, Permanent Representative to the OECD

Mr. Chris HOORNAERT

Mr. Hoornaert was born in Kortrijk, Belgium on 24 December 1963. He holds a degree in political and social sciences from the Catholic University, Leuven, which he received in 1985. He went on to obtain a diploma in European Advanced Studies from the College of Europe, Bruges, in 1986.

From 1986 to 1987, he was a Parliamentary Assistant at the European Parliament. Then, from 1987 to 1988, Mr. Hoornaert completed his military service at the Defence Studies Centre of the Royal Higher Institute for Defence in Brussels. In 1988 he entered the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a trainee. In 1990, Mr. Hoornaert was appointed Second Secretary at the Belgian Embassy in Bucharest, Romania. Then, in 1991, he returned to Brussels where he served on the desk for general development issues at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In 1992, Mr. Hoornaert was appointed Counsellor to the Office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs. The same year, he became a member of the EU European Political Cooperation Secretariat in Brussels. In 1994 he was seconded to the EU Council Secretariat, Common Foreign and Security Policy directorate. Then, from 1996 to 2000, he was the principal assistant to the Deputy Permanent Representative at the Belgian Permanent Representation to the EU. In 2000 he was appointed Counsellor at the Belgian Embassy in London. From 2003 to 2004, he was Director for EU External Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

  
From 2004 until his nomination as Permanent Representative of Belgium to the OECD, Mr. Hoornaert was Diplomatic Advisor to the Belgian Prime Minister.

Ambassador Chris Hoornaert took up his duties as Permanent Representative of Belgium to the OECD on 1 August 2007.
