Conference on fighting corruption and promoting good governance in Eastern Europe and Central Asia

“Creating Conditions for Sustainable Economic and Social Development in Eastern Europe and Central Asia:  Fighting Corruption and Promoting Good Governance”

Astana, Kazakhstan, 16-18 September 2009

This key meeting on fighting corruption and promoting good governance in Eastern Europe and Central Asia took place from 16-18 September 2009 in Astana, Kazakhstan. Organised by the OECD and hosted by the Agency for Combating Economic and Corruption Crime of the Republic of Kazakhstan, it brought together some 130 representatives from Eastern Europe and Central Asia, OECD member countries and beyond to discuss policies, progress made and good practice in four key areas:

• the fight against transnational bribery;
• corruption and business;
• corruption and public education;
• corruption and public procurement.

In light of the global economic crisis and rapid developments in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, the conference provided a unique opportunity to learn about and discuss policy guidelines and standards developed by OECD and to draw on good practice in member countries.

With the aim to reinforce support for fighting corruption and good governance in the ACN region and re-confirm the resolution of the Istanbul Anti-Corruption Action Plan countries to continue the implementation of this important initiative, the Astana Statement on Good Governance and Fighting Corruption was adopted at the meeting on 16 September.
