13/01/03 - Agriculture policy reform and international trade. How can governments achieve more open markets? Presented by Stefan Tangermann, OECD Director for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. Wednesday 15 January, 2003 at 11 a.m., Press Room 1, Palais des Nations (United Nations) Geneva, Switzerland.
At a cost to consumers and taxpayers of more than $300 billion a year, agricultural support in OECD countries is inefficient, distorts international trade and does a poor job of raising farm incomes. These are among the findings experts from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development will be presenting to World Trade Organisation delegates on Tuesday 14 January, 2003. They will show how governments could reform their agricultural policies to create open global markets while at the same time pursuing domestic objectives such as viable rural communities and a healthy environment.
In his presentations to the WTO and to the press Prof. Tangermann will draw on recent OECD work including "Agricultural Policies in OECD Countries: A Positive Reform Agenda".
