Symposium, Setting standards for local public goods provision: challenges for regional development

The Symposium, Setting Standards for Local Public Goods Provision: Challenges for Regional Development, was co-organised by the OECD and the Italian Department for Development Policies of the Ministry of Economic Development, in Rome, Italy, on 20 June 2007.

The Symposium explored whether and how setting standards and targets can be used to improve the local provision of public goods, and thereby enhance regional competitiveness and societal progress. The agenda consisted of two sessions, focusing on: 1. Setting standards for public goods provision; and II. Involving local stakeholders: collaborative approaches to setting targets. Participants discussed policy strategies that have emerged in their countries.

Opening statements were made by Mr. Aart de Geus, Deputy Secretary-General of the OECD; Mr. Pier Luigi Bersani, Minister for Economic Development (Italy), and Mrs. Rosy Bindi, Minister for Family Policies, (Italy).
