Global Forum on Sustainable Development

As an “overarching goal of OECD governments and the OECD”, regularly recognised and reaffirmed by OECD Ministers at the Ministerial Council Meetings since 2001, sustainable development (economic growth, social development, environmental management) is a very important cross-cutting policy issue that is addressed through horizontal work conducted across the various OECD Directorates.

The Global Forum on Sustainable Development is a venue that brings together international experts from member and non member economies to share experiences and explore common policy issues focussing principally on the environmental dimension of sustainable development and its linkages with economic and social policies. Issues to be addressed in the Global Forum on Sustainable Development have also been shaped by the outcomes of the World Summit on Sustainable Development, the Millennium Development Goals, the Doha Development Agenda and its co-operation with the UN Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation. The OECD Round Table on Sustainable Development complements the Global Forum. Both address key issues on the sustainable development agenda.

The next Global Forum on Sustainable Development, to be held in Paris from 29 to 30 November 2006, will focus on "Recent Trends and New Opportunities of Public-Private Partnerships in Water Supply and Sanitation".

  Objectives

  • Contribute to achieving the water-related Millennium Development Goals;
  • Raise awareness and understanding of sustainable development issues worldwide, in particular taking into account its cross-cutting nature involving several policy issues;
  • Facilitate information-sharing on sustainable development issues among policy makers, private sector actors and civil society representatives.
