The first meeting of the OECD Network on Corporate Governance of State-Owned Enterprises in Southern Africa will take place on 6 and 7 May 2008 in Cape Town, South Africa.

In 2005, the OECD issued Guidelines on Corporate Governance of State-Owned Enterprises, which now serve as a global benchmark for countries introducing governance reforms in the state-owned sector.  The establishment of the Southern African Network on Corporate Governance of SOEs will serve as a platform for a structured policy dialogue and an exchange of practical experiences from corporate governance in state owned enterprises. Participants are senior policy-makers, regulators, practitioners and others with first hand expertise from both OECD and non-OECD countries.

This meeting will address a number of high priority issues for the region including the establishment and composition of effective boards, and the role and structure of state ownership entities.  The meeting will also provide an opportunity to discuss the OECD’s recent Global Network meeting on transparency and accountability, which was instrumental in the finalisation of the OECD’s Implementation Guide to Ensure Accountability and Transparency in State Ownership.
