Iceland: Ambassador, Permanent Representative to the OECD

Mr. Thórir IBSEN

 

Mr. Ibsen was born in Reykjavik, Iceland, on 16 October 1959. He holds an M.A. in International Relations from the Faculty of Political Science, York University, Canada, which he obtained in 1984.

 

From 1984 to 1990, Mr. Ibsen was a taught political science and economy at York University and the l’Université canadienne en France. In 1991, he was a producer with the Icelandic Broadcasting Service.   The same year he became a Policy Counsellor at the Ministry for the Environment. In 1993, he was promoted to Head of the Division for International Affairs at the Ministry. Then, in 1995, he was appointed Counselor for Environment, Industry and Commerce at the Icelandic Mission to the European Union. From 1998 to 2001, Mr. Ibsen served as Minister-Counselor at the Department of Natural Resources and the Environmental Affairs at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. In 2001, he became acting director of the department.

 

From 2002 to 2004, he was appointed Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Iceland to Belgium and the Icelandic Mission to the European Union. Then, in 2004, he became Deputy Permanent Representative of the Delegation of Iceland to NATO. In 2007, he returned to Iceland, where he took up the position of Director of the Department of Natural Resources and the Environmental Affairs at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. In March 2008 he was promoted to the rank of Ambassador. From September 2007 to 2008, he was Director of the Defense Department at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. 

 

From 2008, until his nomination as Permanent Representative of Iceland to the OECD,
Mr. Ibsen was Chief Negotiator and Ambassador for Climate Change.

 

Ambassador Thórir Ibsen took up his duties as Permanent Representative of Iceland to the OECD on 2 November 2009.
