Examples from DevCom
While trying to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and with the focus on results orientation in the context of the Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness, communicating about development results has become an important challenge for development communicators members and is therefore a major work-stream in the DevCom work.
With its activities on communicating about results, DevCom aims to:
- Improve the practice of managing for and communicating about results;
- Tie loose ends between managing for and communicating about results;
- Bring communicators, evaluators, results and aid effectiveness experts together;
- Help to develop results communication capacity in and with partner countries.
DevCom has been focusing on reporting development results for a number of years at its annual meetings.
In May 2008, the DevCom network members met with members of the OECD DAC Joint Venture on Development Results (JV MfDR) during a two-day meeting on Managing for and Communicating Development Results in Berlin. The outcomes of the Berlin meeting and earlier work were brought together in a background paper on Managing for and Communicating Development Results by Peter da Costa, an external expert.

On 6 February 2009, during a back-to-back meeting with the JV in Paris, the background paper was presented by Peter da Costa and discussed by DevCom and JV members.

This document was followed by a “Study on Communicating Development Results” (finalised in May 2009), also written by Peter da Costa, commissioned by the JV MfDR. The study reflects the discussion among both DevCom members and experts on results management and is a basis for a planned OECD publication on “Guiding Principles for Results Reporting”.
