Javier Santiso appointed Director of the OECD Development Centre

04/02/2008 - Franco-Spanish economist Javier Santiso has been appointed Director of OECD’s Development Centre, two years after joining the Centre as its Deputy Director and Chief Development Economist. He was previously Chief Economist for Latin America and Emerging Markets at Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA) in Madrid. He has also served as Senior Associate Expert on Latin American Emerging Markets for Crédit Agricole Indosuez (now Calyon).

The Development Centre serves as a bridge between OECD and developing countries, providing policy dialogue on issues such as financing development and business for development. Its publications include the African Economic Outlook, the Latin American Economic Outlook and numerous working papers. Most OECD countries, as well as major developing economies such as Brazil, India and South Africa, are members of the Centre.

Mr. Santiso has published numerous books and articles on international political economy. His most recent publications are The Visible Hand of China in Latin America (OECD, ed.) and Latin America’s Political Economy of the Possible: Beyond Good Revolutionaries and Free Marketeers (MIT). He holds B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from l’Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris, an MBA from HEC School of Management (France) and an Executive MBA from IESE Business School (Spain), and was a Senior Research Fellow of St Antony's College, Oxford.
