Release Estimation Techniques

  • OECD has undertaken a project to identify and review release and transfer estimation techniques currently in use or under development and make them widely available.
  • A Task Force established under the Joint Meeting on Chemicals meets regularly, most recently on 1-2 November, 2001, in Ottawa, Canada.

Inter-Organisation Programme for the sound Management of Chemicals (IOMC)

  • This programme unites UNEP Chemicals, UNITAR, ILO, FAO, UNIDO, WHO and OECD in an international effort to encourage PRTR work.
  • The PRTR Co-ordinating Group which oversees the IOMC work on PRTRs meets 2-3 times per year.
  • Past meetings of the IOMC include : The Americas Workshop, 29-31 July 1997 in Mexico (see outcome: PRTRs: A Tool for Environmental Management and Sustainable Development); Central and Eastern European Countries (CEECs) and the New Independent States (NIS) of the Former Soviet Union, 15-17 January 1997 in Prague; and Southeast Asia, 25-27 June 1996 in Australia.

Report to Council

  • The PRTR Council Act calls for a periodic report on PRTR implementation. The latest report, PRTR Implementation: Member Country Progess, serves as a reference tool for countries developing a new system or modifying an existing one.
  • "How PRTRs Differ: Drivers and Design" is under development. This report will complement the Member country progress report completed in 1999.

International PRTR Conference

  • In September 1998, the largest and most significant gathering of PRTR experts since the Earth Summit in 1992 met in Tokyo at a PRTR Conference.
  • This conference produced a blueprint for future international action to enhance and support PRTR implementation.
