Simon Upton is chairman and founder of the Round Table on Sustainable Development, which was established by the OECD Secretary-General in 1998.  

Prior to taking up his position at the OECD Mr Upton was a member of the New Zealand Parliament.  He entered Parliament in 1981 at the age of 23 and between 1990 and 1999 held a wide range of ministerial portfolios, including Minister for the Environment and Minister for Research, Science & Technology. 

In his ministerial capacity he led New Zealand’s negotiations in the lead-up to the Kyoto Protocol and chaired the 7th Session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development.

In addition to his work at the Round Table, Mr. Upton serves on the board of the International Research Institute for Climate Prediction at Columbia University, NY. He is a member of the Advisory Board to the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction, and is former director of and advisor to International Institute for Sustainable Development’s Global Subsidies Initiative.

Mr Upton is a Rhodes Scholar with degrees in English literature, music and law from the University of Auckland and an MLitt in political philosophy from Oxford University.  He has been a prolific contributor of papers and articles on a wide variety of science and environment topics and was the first non-scientist to be elected a Fellow of the Royal New Zealand Society.

Mr Upton is from a farming family and maintains an interest in agriculture and forestry.  He  works from both the OECD in Paris and his home in New Zealand, where he lives with his wife and two children.
