If you wish to know more about how young people learn in a more

dynamic innovative environment?

In recent decades, OECD economies have experienced a rapid transformation from industrial to knowledge-based systems in which lifelong learning and innovation are central. Individuals who become self-directed learners are able to acquire expert knowledge in various fields, to change careers, and to endow meaningful lives with creativity and variety. Developing these capacities is not only important for a successful economy, but also for effective social engagement, participatory democracy, and more equitable communities. Despite the challenges of the 21st Century, many of today’s schools still operate as they did at the beginning of the last century and are not encouraging the deep learning and skills that underlie innovative activity.

How can today’s schools be transformed so as to become environments of teaching and learning that makes individuals lifelong learners and prepare them for the 21st Century?

This is the question, the “Innovative Learning Environments” Project will answer. It will focus on teaching and learning at the micro-level as opposed to educational policies, management or organisational structures. This is based on the fundamental belief that the most fruitful area in which to search for new approaches to learning within the education system calls for close attention to the nature of learning itself.

The goal of this project is to serve the educational reform agenda by:

Analysing and synthesising current international research findings on learning, teaching and learning environments.
Identifying and analysing examples of innovative learning environments from all over the world.
Engaging with the community of policy reformers, innovators and learning scientists to discuss how to make better use of these findings to make OECD education systems learning driven.
