Bilateral Trade in Goods by Industry and End-use Category

The STAN Bilateral Trade Database by industry and end-use (BTDIxE) is a new tool for analysing global production networks. This database presents international trade in goods broken down both by industrial sectors and by end-use categories for the period 1995-2010, allowing, for example, insights into the patterns of trade in intermediate goods between countries to track global production networks and supply chains, and helping to address policy issues such as trade in value added and trade in tasks.

BTDIxE is an extension of the "traditional" BTD - which covers total trade by industry only. BTDIxE can be accessed via OECD’s data dissemination service OECD.Stat, as can BTD (with series up to year 2009) within the STAN Archives section.

What's new?

In this first version of BTDIxE, estimates of imports and exports of goods are presented for the time period 1995-2010, for all OECD Member Countries and 30 non member economies as reporters. The data are broken down by 67 partners: 34 OECD countries, 30 non member economies, the Rest of world, the partner Unspecified, and the Total World. Trade flows are divided into 46 economic activities and 9 categories including the three major end-use categories: capital goods, intermediate inputs and household consumption.

BTDIxE is derived from the OECD's International Trade by Commodity Statistics (ITCS) database and UNSD’s COMTRADE Database, in which values and quantities of imports and exports are compiled by partner country and according to detailed product classifications (most recently Harmonised System (HS) 2007).

To compile the current version of BTDIxE, trade values are converted from product classification schemes to an industry classification and an end-use classification using 8 standard conversion keys (two for each of four versions of HS).  The BTDIxE industry list is based on ISIC Rev. 3 and is compatible with other OECD data sets such as the STAN database for Industrial Analysis, the STAN R&D Expenditures by Industry (ANBERD), and the Input-Output Tables.

In BTDIxE, values of exports and imports, in current prices,  are provided for all OECD countries and several non member economies as reporters, notably the BRIICS countries (Brazil, the Russian Federation, India, Indonesia, China and South Africa). The bilateral trade flows are presented in thousands of US dollars and end-use shares as a percentage of total for each industry.
