The First Contractual Savings Conference: Supervisory and Regulatory Issues in Private Pensions and Life Insurance was organised jointly by the World Bank, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and the International Network of Pensions Regulators and Supervisors in Washington, DC, United States of America, between 29 April-3 May 2002.

The key objective of the conference was to discuss the role of contractual savings in developed and developing economies, to analyse and review cutting-edge regulatory and supervisory issues of contractual savings institutions and identify best practices. A wide range of policy issues was dealt with during the five day conference, such as: the role of contractual savings in financial markets, corporate governance, financial convergence and its applications for the regulatory and supervisory practices; risk based assets/liability management; funding requirements; accounting standards; pension products and annuities, etc.

The conference brought together high officials from the regulatory and supervisory authorities and other relevant ministries competent in the insurance and private pension field; insurance, mutual fund and bank industries representatives; academics and senior officers from the international organisations.
