Ambassador Ian K. Forsyth took up his post as Permanent Representative of Australia to the OECD on 5 September 2001.
Mr Forsyth was born in 1947 in Perth, Australia. In 1967 Mr Forsyth obtained a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Western Australia. From 1968 to 1975, he worked in various areas of the Departments of Trade and Industry. He worked in the Trade Directorate of the OECD from 1976 to 1977 before returning to the Department of Trade, where he held several senior posts from 1978 to 1984, including Director, GATT Section, and Director, Middle East and North Africa Section.
From 1984 to 1988, Mr Forsyth was the Commercial Counsellor at the Australian Embassy in Washington. He then returned to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra, firstly as Director of the Trade in Services Section, and then as Assistant Secretary, Trade Negotiations and Competitiveness Branch, Principal Adviser, Economic Trade and Development Division, Assistant Secretary, West Europe Branch and Assistant Secretary, Environment Branch.
He was made Australia's Ambassador to Turkey in 1998, where he served until his appointment as Permanent Representative to the OECD. Throughout this time, he also continued to serve as head of Australia's delegations to several international negotiations on environment and trade issues.
Ambassador Forsyth is married (Joo Inn Forsyth) and has three children.
