Ireland: Ambassador, Permanent Representative to the OECD

Mr. Paul MURRAY

Mr. Murray was born in Carlow, Ireland in 1949. He completed his studies at Trinity College, Dublin, where he received a Masters in history and political science.


He entered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1972 at the rank of Third Secretary. From 1974 to 1975 he was posted to the Irish Embassy in London. He returned to the Ministry in 1975 and was appointed First Secretary within the Anglo-Irish Division. In 1978, Mr. Murray became Deputy Head of Mission at the Irish Embassy in Tokyo. Then, in 1980, he was appointed Deputy Head of Mission at the Irish Embassy in Ottawa and the Permanent Mission to the United Nations, New York.

Mr. Murray returned to Ireland in 1985 as head of the Council of Europe Section and Deputy Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. From 1989 to 1997, he served as Political Counsellor at the Irish Embassy in London. Upon his return to Ireland in 1997, Mr. Murray took up the duties of Counsellor within the Anglo-Irish Division of the Ministry. In 1999, Mr. Murray was named Ambassador of Ireland to Seoul and accredited to Pyongyang in January 2004. 

From summer 2004 until his appointment as Permanent Representative of Ireland to the OECD, Mr. Murray was the head of the EU Division at the Ministry in Dublin. He is a published author of biographies on Lafcadio Hearn and Bran Stoker. In 1995 he won the Koizumi Yakumo Literary Prize.


Ambassador Paul Murray took up his duties as Permanent Representative of Ireland to the OECD on 9 November 2006.
