Secretary-General's official visit to Korea (20 - 23 September 2006)

During his official visit to Korea, Angel Gurría:

  • met with Korean President Roh and key government officials, including the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and Economy Kwon O-kyu, Minister of Trade Kim Hyun-chong, Minister of Government Administration and Home Affairs Lee Young-sup, Minister of the Office of Government Policy Coordination Kim Young-ju, Minister of Labour Lee San-soo, and Minister of Environment Lee Chi-beum, to discuss sector-specific ways in which to expand co-operation between the Korean government and the OECD. 
  • launched the second OECD Environmental Performance Review of Korea
  • delivered a keynote speech at a conference to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Korea’s accession to the OECD, which was attended by more than 200 representatives from domestic and foreign political, business, and academic communities; and
  • lectured at the Korea University Business School and the Institute for Global Economics.
  • visited major Korean corporations, such as Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motors.

Financial crisis: Save our savings

Amid the worst current financial crisis since the 1930s, EU leaders have pledged to protect savers’ deposits. Already most OECD countries have explicit deposit insurance schemes for savings up to certain limits. In a number of countries these have now been raised temporarily.
