Higher education institutions (HEIs) in the State of Veracruz

There are 84 HEIs in the State of Veracruz:

  • Universidad Veracruzana
  • 16 state technological institutes
  • 6 federal technological institutes
  • 9 medium-size private universities
  • 52 small-size private institutions

There are about 135,000 HE students in Veracruz. The student enrolment rate is about 19% (19-24-year-olds) which is below the national average (24%). The goal for 2012 is that the national average will reach 30% and none of the states will range below 20%.
36.5% of the students in Veracruz attend the main public university: the Universidad Veracruzana. About 47,000 undergraduates and about 2,000 postgraduates are enrolled there. The university’s campuses are spread out across the State of Veracruz.

  • Colegio de Posgraduados at Veracruzana: research on sustainable agricultural development of the region (in Spanish)
  • Institute of Ecology (Instituto de Ecología): specialized in ecology, biodiversity, preservation and administration of natural resources
  • National Institute of Research on Forestry, Agriculture and Livestock (Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Forestales, Agrícolas y Pesqueras, INIFAP)
  • Research and Higher Education Centre on Social Anthropology (CIESAS Golfo, in Spanish)
