• The Communication “GDP and beyond Measuring progress in a changing world” was presented and discussed with key stakeholders at an event on 8 September 2009, the video of the webcast will be available soon. • OECD Secretary-General congratulates Enrico Giovannini on designation to head Italian statistics institute 

  Hailing the designation of  Enrico Giovannini, OECD’s Chief Statistician since January 2001, as President of the Italian national statistics institute (Istituto nazionale di statistica - ISTAT), OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría said this marks recognition of his prominent role in the field of international statistics and his contribution to strengthening the OECD’s position in this area. 

• Read the Institute of Development Studies new policy briefings on AFTER 2015: PROMOTING PRO-POOR POLICY AFTER THE MDGs - with briefings on 3d Human Wellbeing (that discusses the work of the Global Project); Gender Equality and Low Carbon Growth. The ‘After 2015’ debate is about questioning the value of an MDG-type, target-based approach to international development, about progress so far on poverty reduction, about looking to an uncertain future and exploring what kind of system we will need after the MDG deadline has passed.

• A draft paper from the Global Project that sets out a "Taxonomy" or Framework to measure the progress of societies has been sent for peer review to our network. Read more. 
  

• The Board of the Global Project on "Measuring the Progress of Societies" held its second official meeting in New York in February 2009, where the Board approved the nominations of the co-chairs Mr.Pedro Conceicao (UNDP) and Mr. Enrico Giovannini (OECD). • Newfoundland and Labrador’s system of Community Accounts has been recognized and endorsed by Canada’s Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology, who believes in the importance of accounts like key asset in the development and implementation of a pan-Canadian population health policy. They recommended: "that the Government of Canada supports the development and implementation of Community Accounts, modeled on the Newfoundland and Labrador Community Accounts, in all provinces and territories”.

• International Society of Supreme Audit Institutions have created a special working group on key national indicators  under the chairmanship of Sergey Stepashin, Chairman of the Accounts Chamber of the Russian Federation.  The minutes of their second meeting – which included experts from 16 national audit institutions – are here.

• The new Canadian Institute of Wellbeing and its signature product, the Canadian Index of Wellbeing (CIW) has just been launched. Their first report "How are Canadians really doing?" summarizes the key findings of the first three research studies on Living Standards, Health Populations and Community Vitality.
