Statement by Andrzej Sadoś at the Official Inauguration of the Partnership for Democratic Governance

Launch of the Partnership for Democratic Governance
Statement by Mr. Andrzej Sadoś, Under-Secretary of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Poland
New York, 1 October 2007

Madame Vice Prime Minister Tzipi Livni, Distinguished Ministers, Excellencies, Ambassadors, Ladies and Gentleman,

It is a great pleasure for me to participate in the official inauguration of the Partnership for Democratic Governance. I am especially impressed to see that the Partnership for Democratic Governance, which indeed deserves to receive broad international support, has already brought together key donor countries and international actors. Poland is joining with you to launch this important initiative.

First, I would like to thank all my predecessors for their statements and contributions, and all the founding Members for their presence here today. We strongly believe that this new project will support developing countries in building accountable and transparent democratic institutions, strengthening existing capacities and delivering public services. In the broader system of international co-operation for development, our Partnership would likewise complement other strategies and initiatives geared at building an effective and co-ordinated system of international assistance.

Poland’s co-founding of the Partnership for Democratic Governance is an important sign of our commitment to democratic values and principles. It also reflects Poland’s increasingly important role as a donor of development assistance, and a credible and recognized partner in international development co-operation.

I have the pleasure to confirm the financial support of the Government of Poland for the Partnership for Democratic Governance's activities.

Thank you for your attention, and we are looking forward to co-operating with all present and future participants and beneficiaries of our initiative.
