CIPAE’s new Architecture for Education Division

The International Centre of Prospective and Higher Studies (CIPAE) has created a new division: Architecture for Education. Founded in 1976, CIPAE is a private international institution which encourages education for all and lifelong learning in government policy as well as in economic, social and cultural organisations. CIPAE, based in Puebla, Mexico, collaborates directly with governments throughout the world and with UNESCO.

Luis Benavides, Director-General of CIPAE, created the Architecture for Education Division to better link education with the physical environment where learning and community activities take place. It aims to develop innovative architectural and spatial concepts, involving users that meet communities’ educational as well as social and cultural needs. The new division assists governments (mainly in Latin America and the Caribbean), local municipalities and communities in creating, adapting, or transforming their existing educational building stock into modern Community Learning Centres. The division works in a flexible way, providing technical assistance, training, research and studies, information and documentation.

Their documentation includes over 4 000 publications and other documents related to educational spaces donated by UNESCO’s headquarters in recognition of CIPAE’s work. CIPAE is currently scanning the documents in order to make them available to the public.

Members of the Division are: Rodolfo Almeida, architect (Montpellier), Director of the Division, Jadille Baza, architect (Santiago de Chile), John Beynon, architect (Boulder), Miguel Cangiano, architect (Buenos Aires), Eduardo Millán, architect (Caracas) and Betty Politi, educator (Tel-Aviv)
