* In the short term, the register will only list those substances assessed and approved under the HSNO legislation (implemented for hazardous substances on 2 July 2001). Prior to this date, hazardous substances in New Zealand were separately managed by a number of different laws that focused on specific hazardous properties. Substances that had existing approvals under such previous legislation are gradually being transferred to the HSNO framework and will be added to the Register as they are transferred. However, this process is expected to take 3 to 5 years from 2 July 2001 (transitional period). In the interim, there are a number of different inventories established under the previous legislation that can be referenced to determine the status of hazardous substances in transition eg

  • Explosives: Listed in the Explosives Authorisation Order 2001
  • Scheduled Toxic Substances: Listed in the schedules to the Toxic Substances Regulations 1983 and on the ERMA website
  • Notified Toxic Substances: Listed in a database held by ERMA New Zealand. Single chemicals notified more than four times listed on the ERMA website
  • Dangerous Goods: Listed on the ERMA website
