Pathways for disabled students to tertiary education and employment

This five-year (2007-2011) project intends to increase persons with disabilities’ participation to employment and to prevent them being dependant from benefit systems. It aims to facilitate cost-effective planning and monitoring through reliable and internationally comparable data on access and success opportunities given to persons with disabilities in secondary education and tertiary education. It looks at good transition programmes in order to support schools in focusing on process and learning outcomes, developing cross-sectoral policies and strategies as well as adapting school organisation and curricula. It promotes finally best quality transition indicators with respect to the enabling or disabling effect of policies and provision.

The pathways project follows a resource based approach articulating employment, health and education issues. It identifies therefore transition policies followed by participating countries with respect to persons with disabilities. Participating countries will carry out a three-year longitudinal study providing information on what works with regard to individual pathways as well as on best practices to be developed. Case studies will describe good examples of successful pathways suggested by the developed educational practices and support strategies.
