Government programmes

  • The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) undertakes a range of work to help improve national financial literacy:
    • National Financial Literacy Strategy: ASIC has developed a National Financial Literacy Strategy to provide a national direction for this priority area. At www.financialliteracy.gov.au you will find information about ASIC's financial literacy work, other Australian financial  literacy programs and relevant research.
    • MoneySmart: MoneySmart is ASIC's new consumer website. At www.moneysmart.gov.au there is information, tools and calculators, printed guides and a helpline to assist consumers to make smart choices about their personal finances.
    • Teaching Financial Literacy: Teaching Financial Literacy is ASIC's website for educators. At http://teaching.financialliteracy.gov.au there is a range of useful background information about financial literacy initiatives in Australia, an introductory professional learning module for teachers and access to ready-to-use resources. This website will be further developed in later 2011 to provide additional support materials for teachers, linked to the new Australian Curriculum.
  • Centrelink: The Financial Information Service (FIS) is a free education and information service provided by Centrelink through seminars, by phone or appointment.  It helps people to make informed decisions about investment and financial issues.
  • Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA)Financial Management Program (FMP): The Australian Government’s Financial Management Program (the Program) aims to build financial resilience and wellbeing among those most at risk of financial and social exclusion and disadvantage. The Program, delivered through FaHCSIA, helps people across a range of income and financial literacy levels to manage their money, overcome financial adversity participate in their communities and plan for the medium to long term.
  • Indigenous Land Corporation (ILC): Life Skills Education for Indigenous people
  • The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority, www.vcaa.vic.edu.au

 

Civil society programmes

  • The Australian Financial Services Ombudsman, www.fos.org.au/centric/home_page.jsp
    A dispute resolution service dealing with disputes that individuals and small business have with their financial service providers.
  • Disadvantaged children education, The Smith Family, www.thesmithfamily.com.au:
    The Smith Family is a national, independent non profit organisation that helps disadvantaged Australian children realise their potential through education.
