A more successful learning experience for ALL students
Getting the data: AHELO will be a direct assessment of what students know and can do upon graduation. This data will be linked to information on student background and the learning environment through a contextual survey.
Using the data: this will highlight best practicesand effective teaching and learning strategies, for different contexts and different types of students, i.e. what works, for whom and in which contexts?
The ultimate goal of AHELO is to develop usable knowledge – for academics, departments and institutions – on what they can do to enable all students to succeed. The AHELO feasibility study will also advance student success indirectly since its emphasis on learning outcomes is contributing to raising awareness and shift public perceptions of quality towards greater weight on teaching.
Why should you sponsor AHELO?
It is in everyone’s interest to see this project developed and developed well. High quality education for all is a priority. But public spending on education does not always reflect this. AHELO is a cutting edge project and like many bold initiatives it needs support philanthropic support to prove itself.
The first phase of the feasibility study is going strong but we need partners to help finance the second phase: the development of the contextual questionnaire which will be essential for identifying best practices and the implementation of the tests in the participating institutions.

"We at Lumina Foundation are very interested in developing effective ways to measure what college students are actually learning. Establishing these measurable learning outcomes is a vital step in ensuring that institutions best meet the needs of students, the workforce and society as a whole. There is no doubt that higher education in the United States - as elsewhere-faces significant, persistent challenges in its efforts to foster and ensure equity. The gap between Americans with college degrees and those without college degrees has always been too wide, and it's actually getting wider. So closing the achievement gap isn't just a nice thing to do, it's also the smart thing to do. If assessing learning outcomes internationally helps us to do that, as AHELO endeavors, then I'm all for it."
Jamie Merisotis, President, Lumina Foundation for Education
"A widely accepted measurement system which could assess, across countries, what undergraduate students know and can do would be an exceptionally valuable tool in assessing how higher education institutions and systems perform by reference to international benchmarks. Current systems of comparison, while providing valuable insights into performance, suffer from important deficiencies. In addition, the process of evaluation against clear and relevant metrics would give HEIs an incentive to focus on outcomes and a better sense of where they should put their resources and energies. The ALELO project offers the prospect of achieving these outcomes which is why Ireland is happy to support this pilot project."
