16/11/2005 - A two-day meeting in Melbourne, Australia, of government officials from 55 OECD and non-OECD economies marked a further stage in international discussions on what is needed for a so-called "global level playing field" in the areas of transparency and exchange of information for tax purposes.
Participants at the OECD Global Forum on Taxation in Melbourne, Australia, on 15-16 November 2005 discussed the outcome of a review of legal and administrative frameworks in place in more than 80 countries. Discussions showed that considerable progress had already been made towards a global level playing field in the areas of transparency and effective exchange of information in tax matters. They identified a number of areas where further progress needs to be made.
The meeting was jointly chaired by the Governor of the Central Bank of Samoa, Papali'i Tommy Scanlan, and the Chair of the OECD's Committee on Fiscal Affairs, Bill McCloskey. Australia's Treasurer, Peter Costello, opened the meeting. A statement set out the conclusions of the meeting as well as the next steps in the process.
