Sixth Conference on Financial Sector Development in the Central Asian countries, Azerbaijan and Mongolia

29-30 April 2004, Istanbul, Turkey

The first Conference on Financial Sector Development in the Central Asian Countries, Azerbaijan and Mongolia was launched in Istanbul in 1995, in order to provide an opportunity for policy makers and experts from both the Central Asian region and OECD countries to exchange their policy views and experiences of this topic.  The sixth conference in this series was once again organised by the Outreach Unit for Financial Sector Reform of the Directorate for Financial and Enterprise Affairs of the OECD, under the aegis of the Centre for Co-operation with Non-Members program, with sponsorship from the Government of Japan.

During the previous conferences, a variety of financial topics were discussed, covering areas such as banking sector restructuring, small- and medium-sized enterprise financing and capital market development.  The sixth conference mainly focused on five issues relating to "securities market development": 1) Overview of Securities Markets in the Region; 2) Effective Measures to Develop Securities Markets and Infrastructure, which mainly focuses on Institutional Investors (Part A) and Clearing and Settlement System (Part B); 3) Regulation of Securities Markets; 4) Supervision of Securities Markets; and 5) Investors' Confidence Building.

Policy makers in charge of these issues in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan and Mongolia participated in this conference, as well as experts from OECD countries and international organisations.
