'What Works' in Higher Education

Under this heading IMHE arranges a series of international seminars on different aspects of institutional management. The seminars are designed to assist Member institutions by reviewing current policy and practice and by disseminating examples of successful innovation. They provide professional development for participants, and can lead to the publication of reports and/or the creation of informal networks.

The Paris seminar in August 2004, with 110 participants, had as its theme “Communicating in Higher Education – Image and Reality”.  It addressed the impact of the image projected by higher education institutions among their various audiences.  This means all of those in contact with an institution, be they students, financial authorities or staff. Image and communication besides being part of an institution’s broader strategy, are important for recruitment of students and staff as well as for matters such as funding and quality assessment.

The August 2005 seminar was about human resource management. A good number of IMHE member institutions were represented, among them, more than 200 people who attended the latest "What works - best practice" conference.
There were presentations on a wide range of HR issues, including:

* recruiting and retaining a new generation of academics
* negotiating labour relations
* improving diversity
* stimulating productivity, and
* evaluating performance and remuneration systems.

The highlight of the conference for many was the presentation by the former head of human resources at Harvard University, Ms Polly Price, who started by asking whether professionals from the corporate world could succeed as managers in higher education.

The remainder of the 40 plenary speakers and contributors to workshops came from a number of OECD member countries and beyond, including Malaysia, Nigeria, Singapore, South Africa, Argentina.

The 2006 August seminar was on "Governing bodies of higher education institutions: roles and responsibilities". It attracted around 100 participants. The changing patterns of governance formed the framework for the seminar. The focus was on top level institutional governance, where much has changed in the last decade. The keynote speaker was Alan Larsson, former Minister of Sweden.

The forthcoming meeting will be held September 2009.
