The OECD Statistics Dissemination Project

We want to make our statistics easier to find, by more people, and to improve the services we offer. The Statistics Dissemination Project, started in 2007 will create three new services:

·           OECD Statistics provides a single online platform - OECD.stat -  which enables you to search for and extract data from across OECD’s many databases.

·           OECD Core Data service allows you to quickly find and download our most frequently requested key tables.

·           OECD Facts and Figures service combines commentary with dynamic graphs.

OECD Statistics

OECD.Stat offers three key features:

·          Discovery: You can search for complex statistical data across OECD databases with one click access to the datasets themselves from the search results. .

·          Mix and Merge:  For the first time, you can extract data from across all 50 databases in one enquiry.  New functions enable you to gather and assemble data from various datasets in unique and customisable tables and view data in a multitude of formats, including dynamic graphs.

·          Metadata:  Improved metadata down to the level of each datapoint  means that you can understand the origins of each number and the overall context, aiding comprehension.

OECD.Stat is freely available as a beta release until the end of October 2008.  While we are working on improving our services, all of our complete online databases will continue to be available via our online library, SourceOECD (www.SourceOECD.org)

The specialist information press, as well as the users of SourceOECD, have acclaimed this as a major improvement in terms of user-friendliness of OECD statistics:

"(OECD.stat)...will be welcomed by social scientists."   -Information World Review

OECD.stat has been shortlisted for the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers Award for Publishing Innovations 2008.

Later this year, OECD Statistics will be improved to provide access to thematic database packages with links to related ready-made tables and publications.  A pilot of this forthcoming service is available here:

Easy Access to Key Tables (Core Data)

The OECD delivered 735,000 StatLinks  in 2007, indicating that this is a very popular format for users. StatLinks are links under tables and graphs in OECD publications which link to Excel® tables containing the data. Core data will consist of a series of our most requested data, grouped into themes and made available in ready-made take-away formats, particularly Excel®. In the fourth quarter of 2008 a selected set of ready-to-download tables/data sets will be freely accessible via the Statistics Portal and SourceOECD as part of the core data service.

Facts and Figures Bring Data Alive Visually

OECD Factbook 2008 in Gapminder Graphs allows you to unveil the interactions between indicators in the OECD Factbook over time.  Try Out Gapminder!

In addition, the free online economic statistics in the OECD Factbook 2008 (http://www.SourceOECD.org/Factbook) have been transformed to include animated graphics of the key indicators which bring the data alive visually.

Main Economic Indicators data on IMF Data Mapper® - The Joint IMF-OECD Statistics database combines selected data from IMF and OECD to provide data on a global scale for some key economic variables such as inflation and trade.

Forthcoming

Over the coming months we will be launching a number of major improvements to our online services covering both our statistical and analytical publications. Forthcoming features include an A to Z index of OECD statistics, access to thematic database packages with links to related ready-made tables and analytical material, a database citation tool, and an option for users to share links to custom-made tables with others. A key feature is to actively push publishing metadata, which describes each database and data table, along with Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) into non-OECD websites that are already heavily used by OECD target audiences and to enable databases to be interwoven with analytical content.

This page will be regularly updated with the latest developments on the project.
