Experts' Meeting on "Technical Skills Development in Africa" - Paris, 10 December 2007

Technical Skills Development in Africa" is the thematic focus of the forthcoming African Economic Outlook (AEO) - to be released in May 2008.

Quality Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is recognized to be a key for enhancing economic competitiveness and for contributing to social inclusion, decent employment and income and poverty reduction. An insufficient supply of technical skills can also be a bottleneck to private sector development and economic growth.

This experts' meeting brought together experts, representatives of government and the private sector, both from Africa and OECD countries, to exchange, in its informal setting, views on the key issues and challenges facing African countries in promoting technical skills development. Its objectives were to

(i) exchange views on the key issues and challenges facing African countries in promoting technical skills development;

(ii) identify policy experiences in developing, implementing and sustaining successful technical and vocational education and training programmes;

(iii) help the AEO secretariat identify issues to be covered in the forthcoming edition of the AEO, which will document TVET trends, discuss current approaches to skills development, and identify priorities for further policy-oriented research.

The meeting was structured in two parts, each of which with two sessions. In each session, presentations from experts were followed by a lively debate between panellists and participants.

The meeting was organised in partnership by the OECD Development Centre and the AfDB, with the support of the French Development Agency.
