Discussion on Economic Downturn

The Secretariat set the scene for the discussions by presenting a paper on recent global economic developments related to the economic crisis:

The Secretariat presented the work of the OECD's Steel Committee and the effects of the economic crisis on steel which is a signifiant input on shipbuilding:

• Impact of the economic crisis on the steel industry

Industry/Labour outlook - Industry and labout representatives made presentations to update the WP6 on the actual and expected impact of the economic downturn on shipbuilding:

• China: Impact of the world financial crisis on China's shipbuilding industry
• Community of European Shipyards' Association (CESA): Impact of the economic crisis on the world shiopbuilding industry
• Shipbuilders' Association of Japan (SAJ): Present shipbuilding market - Economic crisis and its impact
• Korean Shipbuilders' Association (KOSHIPA): Impact of the economic downturn on the shipbuilding industry
• Russia: Etat actuel et perspectives du développement de la construction navale en Russie (in French only)
• Submission from the International Metal Workers' Federation (IMF)

Plans by governments in response to the economic crisis, including shipbuilding industry specific stimulus packages and other measures:

Delegations were invited to discuss possible future short and long-term policy agendas to deal with the impact of the economic downturn on the shipbuilding sector:
