Janet Looney

Analyst

Janet Looney is responsible for the CERI programme entitled:  “What Works in Innovation in Education”.  The current focus of the programme is on “formative assessment”.  A first report (2002 -2005) combined international reviews of research, case studies and policy analyses to clarify the concept of and approaches to formative assessment and its relation to broader teaching strategies.  The results of this study have been widely disseminated.

A new study (2005- 2006) is examining approaches to “Improving Teaching and Learning for Adults with Basic Skill Needs through Formative Assessment”.  The study will:

1. Develop studies of exemplary teaching and assessment practice for adults with basic skill needs.
2. Bring together international scholarship on teaching and assessment for adults with basic skill needs.
3. Identify effective policy levers for improving the quality of provision in the adult basic skills sector.
4. Create opportunities for policy officials, researchers and practitioners to exchange insights and ideas on promoting effective teaching, assessment and evaluation.
