MENA, OECD ministers to meet in Cairo on investment, governance policies

06/11/2007 - Ministers from Middle East and North African countries and from OECD countries will meet in Cairo on 28-29 November to discuss progress in reforms to encourage investment and improve public governance in the MENA region.

The two-part event, bringing together ministers reponsible for investment policy on 28 November and ministers responsible for public governance on 29 November, marks a new stage in a three-year old cooperation initiative involving OECD countries and governments in Middle East North Africa (MENA) countries.

Senior OECD officials involved in the MENA-OECD initiative, Director of OECD's Governance Directorate Odile Sallard and Deputy Director for Financial and Enterprise Affairs Rainer Geiger, will brief journalists on progress and prospects for future co-operation at the Centre d'Accueil de la Presse Etrangere (CAPE) - Maison de Radio France, 116, avenue du President Kennedy, 75116 Paris, at 11.00 a.m. on Wednesday 14 November.

Launched in 2004, the two-pronged MENA-OECD initiative is designed to promote economic growth and employment by encouraging reforms in areas relating to investment and public administration.

Prior to the Ministerial Meetings, a Business Forum on 27 November will feature an "enterprise matchmaking" event co-organised with UNIDO. This will also be the occasion for presentation of the "MENA 500" companies publication, listing for the first time leading groups and companies across the region in a comprehensive survey. A Women Business Leaders Forum will highlight achievements and obstacles faced by women entrepreneurs in the region.

On 28 November, ministers from MENA and OECD countries will examine ways to advance the investment climate in the region. On 29 November, ministers will discuss progress made in public sector modernisation and review future directions. The business forum and both ministerial meetings are open to journalists.

Details of the programme can be found at www.oecd.org/mena. For further information and to register for the 14 November briefing and/or the ministerial conferences, journalists are invited to contact OECD's Media Division (tel. +33 1 4524 9700).
