Health at a Glance. OECD Indicators 2003

08/10/2003 - Spending on health care is outpacing economic growth in OECD countries and the share of GDP devoted to health care, already more than 10% in some countries, is rising rapidly. What are the main factors driving health spending? How is it funded? Are we getting good value? And what are the main health risks looming on the horizon?

The second edition of the OECD’s Health at a Glance tracks trends in key health indicators across OECD countries, presenting comparative data on: health status, such as life expectancy and premature mortality; healthcare resources such as number of physicians, nurses, medical technologies and hospital beds; health expenditure per capita and as a proportion of GDP; and non-medical determinants of health like alcohol, tobacco and obesity.

The OECD will release these findings at a news conference at the Centre d’accueil de la presse étrangère (CAPE) at 9.00 a.m., Thursday 16 October.  Martine Durand, deputy-director of Employment, Labour and Social Affairs, and Gaetan Lafortune, who compiled the book, will present their findings and respond to questions.

Country specific notes on France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Finland and Hungary will be available at the news conference.

To attend the news conference, or for further information on the OECD’s work on health, journalists are invited to contact the Media Relations Division  or Helen Fisher (tel.  33 1 45 24 80 97).
