From July 14-17 2009 the Global Project on Measuring the Progress of Societies ran a training course on ‘Statistics, Knowledge and Policy’ in conjunction with the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission and the International Society for Quality of Life Studies (ISQOLS). For this training course we had 16 people attend from 12 different countries and with many different professional backgrounds (economic, social and statistical).
“Persons talking about numbers” it’s quite different than “number talking about persons”
Giacomo Galletti, Agenzia Reginale Sanità Toscana, Italy
For more information on this course you can review the Agenda and Presentations as well as the Training Course Preparation Booklet.
The course focused on the importance of statistics for democracy and democratic decision-making; measures of progress that go beyond GDP; tools to transform statistics into knowledge; evidence, civic engagement and policy-making; the role of National Statistical Offices in the 21st Century and their boundaries.
In particular:
- How to measure progress;
- What to measure: the specific dimensions of progress;
- How to communicate the measures to a broad public.
