Public Opinion and Engagement for Development

Policy makers working on development issues care about public attitudes for at least two reasons: they are accountable to taxpayers, and they need public support.

 

Yet, evidence on public attitudes towards development across OECD countries is uneven and scattered, and the strategic importance of communication for development is not widely understood.

For over a decade, the Development Centre has been monitoring and analysing trends in public opinion about development cooperation in OECD countries. It also facilitates the DevCom Network: the Informal Network of DAC Development Communicators.

The OECD Development Centre and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Co-operation and Development (BMZ) organised an Informal Experts’ Meeting on Managing for and Communicating about Development Results in Berlin on 19 and 20 May 2008.

After a slow start, public awareness about the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) is rising steadily in OECD countries, especially where publicity campaigns are run. Our study of three OECD countries shows that successful MDG campaigns are long-term, funded adequately, and involve local authorities, civil society organisations and the private sector.

Summary report of the 2007 Annual DevCom Meeting

In November 2007, the members of the Informal Network of DAC Development Communicators met in Lisbon for two days of brainstorming about the current state and future of development communication. The summary report gives an overview of the discussions and projects for the coming year.
