Finland: Ambassador, Permanent Representative to the OECD

Mr. Pertti MAJANEN

Mr. Majanen was born in Helsinki, Finland, in 1947. He received a BA in English Philology, International Politics and Literature from the University of Helsinki in 1971 and a MA in International Politics, International Law, Economics and Political History from the same university in 1973.


Mr. Majanen entered the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in 1974, as an Attaché and recruitment officer in the Department for International Development Cooperation, Secretariat for Personnel Assistance. In 1978 he was appointed Acting Head of the Recruitment Section.


In 1980 he was posted as Second Secretary to the Embassy of Finland in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. In 1983 he returned to the Department of International Development Cooperation as Head of Section for Social Development, and in 1986 became Director of the Division for Non-Governmental Organisations. From 1988 to 1991, he was posted as Chargé d’Affaires to the Embassy of Finland in San José, Costa Rica.


Mr. Majanen returned to the Department for International Cooperation and was Director of the Division for Asia and Latin America from 1991 to 1994, and the Division for EU-coordination from 1994 to 1995. Thereafter he was nominated Deputy Director General of Development Policy Coordination before being posted as Ambassador of Finland to Manila, Philippines in 1997.


From 2000 until his appointment as Permanent Representative of Finland to the OECD, Mr. Majanen was Under-Secretary of State responsible for Development Cooperation in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.


Ambassador Majanen took up his post with the OECD on 6 September 2005.

Financial crisis: Save our savings

Amid the worst current financial crisis since the 1930s, EU leaders have pledged to protect savers’ deposits. Already most OECD countries have explicit deposit insurance schemes for savings up to certain limits. In a number of countries these have now been raised temporarily.
