Background
The creation of a Women’s Regional Group for conflict prevention is a result of women’s involvement in various actions undertaken by the SWAC as from November 2004 in the areas of democracy, policy dialogue, conflict prevention and governance and post-conflict situations. Set up in 2006 after the workshops in Niamey, Niger, the Women’s Group of West Africa for Governance and Conflict Prevention is based on administrative co-ordination and logistical contributions provided by the SWAC.
Composition
The Group brings together women from ECOWAS member countries as well as Mauritania who are interested in the gender dimension within their professional framework and/or involved at the local, national and regional levels through civil society organisations. The Group consists of teachers, jurists, lawyers, judges, researchers, members of farmer organisations, security networks, the health sector, business leaders, writers, parliamentarians and former ministers, people actively working for sustainable development and democracy.
Objectives
The Group's main objectives are to:

Facilitate exchanges of experience and dialogue among West African women from various walks of life on women’s role and responsibilities in democratic governance and conflict prevention;

Contribute to the promotion of gender issues in conflict prevention and peace;

Launch advocacy campaigns in support of democracy and peace at the national and regional levels.
