Italy: Ambassador, Permanent Representative to the OECD

Mr. Carlo Maria OLIVA


He was born in Rome, on 20 November 1949. In 1973, he graduated with a degree in law from the University of Rome.

Mr. Oliva entered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1975. From 1976 to 1979, he served as Secretary of Legation at the Directorate General for Personnel. In 1979, he was Second Secretary and later First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Italy to the International Organisations in Geneva, where he was responsible for the Conference on Disarmament. Then, in 1983, Mr. Oliva was posted to Kuwait as First Secretary. From 1985 to 1987, he served as Counsellor at the Directorate General for Personnel of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome. In 1987, he was assigned to the Permanent Mission of Italy to NATO in Brussels.

In 1993, Mr. Oliva returned to Rome where he was appointed Head of the Office of Personnel Overseas Assignments at the Directorate General for Personnel of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1996 to 2001, he served at the Permanent Mission of Italy to the European Union, where he was responsible for internal market and research issues. Then, in 2001, he was appointed Consul General in Geneva. From 2002 to 2004, he was again posted to the Directorate General for Personnel of the Ministry, serving as Minister Plenipotentiary. In 2004, he was appointed Deputy Director General for European Integration and successively Director General for the same Directorate.

From 2007 until his nomination as Permanent Representative of Italy to the OECD, Mr. Oliva was Deputy Secretary-General of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was promoted to the rank of Ambassador in January 2010.

Ambassador Carlo Maria Oliva took up his duties as Permanent Representative of Italy to the OECD on 10 September 2010.
