Mr Antonio ARMELLINI
Antonio Armellini was born in Rome on 2 August 1943. He holds a degree in law from the University of Rome, which he obtained in 1967. He was a Fulbright and ASSV Scholar at Stanford University in 1962-63.
From 1968 to 1969, Mr. Armellini was an International Civil Servant at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. He joined the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1969 and was assigned to the Foreign Minister’s Private Office. From 1972 to 1974, he was spokesperson for Commissioner Altiero Spinelli at the European Commission. Then, in 1974, he returned to the Foreign Minister’s Private Office in Rome. In 1975 he was assigned to the Prime Minister’s Office. From 1976 to 1978, Mr. Armellini served as Commercial Counsellor and Head of the Economic Section at the Italian Embassy to Poland. Then, from 1978 to 1980, he was Political Counsellor and Deputy Head of Mission at the Italian Embassy in Ethiopia. In 1981, Mr. Armellini returned to Rome as Head of Political Planning at the Ministry. From 1985 to 1987 he was Diplomatic Advisor to the Minister of Transport. In 1986, he was appointed Chair of the Quadripartite Technical Commission on transalpine tunnels at the Ministry of Transport.
From 1988 to 1992, Mr. Armellini served as Head of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE) Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1990 to 1992, he also served as roving Ambassador to the CSCE (Austria, Russia and Finland). From 1993 to 1998, he was Minister-Counsellor and Deputy Head of Mission at the Italian Embassy to the United Kingdom. In 1998, Mr. Armellini was appointed Ambassador to Algeria. Then, from 2000 to 2001, he was national coordinator for the Stability Pact for South-East Europe. From 2001 to 2002 he was International Anti-terrorism Coordinator with the rank of Ambassador. From 2003 to 2004, he served as Special Italian Envoy in Iraq also with the rank of Ambassador.
From 2004 until his nomination as Permanent Representative of Italy to the OECD, Mr. Armellini was Ambassador to India.
Ambassador Armellini is married and has two children.
Ambassador Antonio Armellini took up his duties as Permanent Representative of Italy to the OECD on 1 August 2008.
