Corporate Governance in Romania: 18-19 September 2001

On 18-19 September 2001 a high level meeting was held in Bucharest to disseminate and discuss the OECD's draft Assessment Report and Preliminary Recommendations on Corporate Governance in Romania, in preparation for the release of the Final Assessment Report on December 11, 2001. The meeting was co-hosted by the National Securities Commission of Romania and the Bucharest Stock Exchange, and was sponsored by USAID.
The speakers and other participants included prominent members of Romania's academic, financial, legal, and business communities, as well as a number of leading experts on Corporate Governance from OECD countries. All aspects of corporate governance were discussed, including the rights and equitable treatment of shareholders, the role of stakeholders, the role of the board, and transparency and disclosure as well as the implications for corporate governance of the privatisation process and the resulting corporate landscape. Overall, the meeting confirmed that while many challenges lay ahead for successful reform in Romania, there is substantial interest in and enthusiasm for the subject.

On 11 December 2001 the final Report on Corporate Governance in Romania was presented at a meeting in Bucharest.
