OECD To Present Territorial Review of Mexico, 27 September, 2002

Development opportunities are at the heart of regional policy challenges highlighted in the OECD's Territorial Review of Mexico, to be released on 27 September. The study assesses the unused potential of Mexico's regions, local comparative advantages and how responsibilities and resources are allocated across the different levels of government. The report emphasises the need for a coherent, long-term territorial development strategy in Mexico and proposes policies for poverty alleviation and improving infrastructure and competitiveness.

The study was supported and co-ordinated by Mexico's Office of the Presidency for Strategic Planning and Regional Development and the Ministry of Social Development.

The OECD Territorial Review of Mexico will be presented in Mexico City at a press conference at 11:30a.m. on 27 September 2002, at OECD Mexico Centre, located in Presidente Mazarik 526, Col. Polanco, Mexico. Among the participants will be Dr. Carlos Flores, Head of the Office of the Presidency for Strategic Planning and Regional Development, Mrs. Odile Sallard, Director of Public Governance and Territorial Development, OECD and Mr. Mario Pezzini, Head of Territorial Reviews and Governance Division, and Mr. Nicola Crosta, Administrator, OECD who were responsible for the direction and elaboration of the study.

After the press conference, there will be a public presentation of the study at the Centro de Investigación y Docencia Economicas, located in Carretera Mexico-Toluca #3655, Col. Lomas de Santa Fe, C.P. 01210, Mexico, D.F.

The Territorial Review of Mexico is the latest in a series of OECD reviews that focus on member countries' territorial polices and on evaluating their regional impact. Building on the experience acquired through its previous country studies, the OECD's Public Governance and Territorial Development Division aims to present a global study on Mexico. The principal objectives are to: a) identify the nature and scale of territorial challenges using a common analytical framework; b) assist governments in assessing and improving their territorial policies; c) assess the distribution of competencies and resources among the different levels of government; and d) identify and disseminate information on best practices regarding governance.
