  • Awarded the Calouste Gulbenkian Prize for Science and Technology, 1987, for his work “A Formação do Espaço Económico Nacional. Portugal 1810-1913” (“The shaping of the National Economic Area. Portugal 1810-1913”), which was the doctoral dissertation
  • Collaborator of the Universidade de Évora (University of Evora), 1988-89, the Lisboa Stock Exchange, 1992-1994, the Luso-American Foundation, and the TagusPark as a consultant and researcher
  • Councillor, in charge of the areas of Culture and Social Housing, at the Oeiras City Council, between 1994 and 2001, and responsible for the program of rehousing and eradication of degraded neighbourhoods
  • Vice-President of the District Political Committee of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) for the Lisboa Metropolitan Area, 1996-1998
  • Social Democratic Party spokesperson for education matters, 1996-1997 and 1999-2002
  • Member of the Portuguese Parliament by the Lisboa constituency and Vice-President of the Social Democratic Party’s Parliamentary Group, 1999-2002
  • Re-elected Member of the Portuguese Parliament by the Lisboa constituency, March 2002
  • Minister of Education in the Portuguese XV Constitutional Government since 6th April 2002
