144th Session of the Trade Committee - Agenda

1.     The future of the multilateral trading system

At the time of this 144th Session of the Trade Committee, discussions on the DDA are evolving rapidly in Geneva. In order to take a forward-looking approach to developments in the WTO, the Trade Committee is invited to begin an informal brainstorming on the future of the multilateral trading system, taking into account possible outcomes of the current round of negotiations.

2.     Report on South-South goods trade

This paper is the second instalment of the OECD work that intends to inform the debate on the development potential associated with South-South trade in goods with a view to facilitating the ongoing WTO negotiations. The first part of the paper employs the gravity methodology to contribute to understanding past trends in world goods trade with a special focus on South-South trade. The second part of the paper employs a computable general equilibrium approach for a forward-looking assessment of the potential gains to developing countries from enhancing South-South trade in goods in the context of the multilateral negotiations. The paper is submitted for discussion.

3.     Report on South-South trade in services

This report combines statistical and empirical analyses, anecdotal evidence and theoretical considerations related to trade in services to (i) derive some findings about the magnitude of South-South services trade via the various modes of supply, and (ii) to identify key features governing the South-South dimension of services trade, including determinants and the potential for such trade and its impact on goods trade. The paper is submitted for discussion.

4.     Aid for trade

This paper is the OECD contribution to the WTO taskforce deliberations on aid for trade and consultations with international organisations. It is presented for information.

5.     Draft Programme of Work and Budget 2007-2008

The Secretariat will present the draft Programme of Work and Budget of the Trade Directorate for 2007-2008, and update the Committee on the preparations for the Secretary-General’s submission for the Organisation.
