Agricultural Commodities Outlook Database, 1970-2016

The electronic version of the OECD Agricultural Commodities Outlook database complements the annual agricultural outlook publication (the OECD Agricultural Outlook 2007-2016) by providing users with detailed agricultural commodity projections to 2016 for production, consumption, trade, stocks and prices for temperate zone agricultural products in OECD countries and selected information on other countries, including Argentina, Brazil, China, Russia and the Other Independent States of the Former Soviet Union. Aggregate results are also provided for the OECD and non-OECD areas as well as for the World.

Agricultural Support Estimates

This database is a complement to the report Agricultural Policies in OECD Countries: Monitoring and Evaluation 2007. It provides detailed information on Producer support estimates and Consumer support estimates. These include the complete data series on PSE/CSE, the reference prices used, the exchange rates used and a complete documentation of definitions and sources provided on a country and commodity basis.

All the information is provided from 1986 to 2005. The database is made of 4 subsets called “categories”.

  • Total Support Estimates (in country tables)
  • Market Price Support and Consumer Support Estimates by commodity
    1. Level of production
    2. Producer price (at farm gate)
    3. Value of production (at farm gate)
    4. Level of consumption
    5. Consumption price (at farm gate)
    6. Value of consumption (at farm gate)
    7. Reference price (at farm gate)
    8. Producer price differential
    9. Consumer price differential
    10. Market transfers
    11. Budgetary transfers
    12. Market Price Support (MPS)
    13. Consumer Support Estimate (CSE)
      1. Unit CSE
      2. Percentage CSE
      3. Consumer NAC
  • Producer Support Estimates by commodity
  • Exchange Rates

The new OECD classification of total transfers associated with agricultural policies (TSE), groups the policy measures into three main categories: transfers to producers individually (PSE), transfers to consumers individually (CSE), and transfers to general services to agriculture collectively (GSSE).

Market Price Support (MPS): an indicator of the annual monetary value of gross transfers from consumers and taxpayers to agricultural producers arising from policy measures creating a gap between domestic market prices and border prices of a specific agricultural commodity, measured at the farmgate level.

Consumer Support Estimate (CSE): an indicator of the annual monetary value of gross transfers to (from) consumers of agricultural commodities, measured at the farm gate level, arising from policy measures which support agriculture, regardless of their nature, objectives or impacts on consumption of farm products.

List of Commodities:
Wheat, Durum wheat, Common wheat, Maize, Other grains, Oats, Barley, Sorghum, Rice, Oilseeds, Sunflower, Rapeseed, Soybean, Refined sugar, Milk, Beef and veal, Pigmeat, Sheep meat, Wool, Poultry meat, Eggs ,Cotton, Potatoes, Tomatoes, Beans, Red pepper, Garlic, Coffeebeans, Grapes, Apples, Tobacco. Each may not list all commodities.

The countries/areas covered are Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, the European Union, Hungary, Iceland, Japan, Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Switzerland, Turkey and the United States.

Data for Russia and Ukraine have not been updated in 2005. However, the 2004 datasets for these countries are included

Economic Accounts for Agriculture - 1995-2003

(Please Note: Updating of this data has been discontinued)

This database is unique in the sense that it is providing harmonized agricultural economic data for all OECD countries, comparable with the EU-15.

The data is presented in a 5-dimensional table. The five dimensions of the table are:

  • countries,
  • measure (current national currency, current USD converting using PPP, constant national currency, constant USD converting using PPP, price indexes currencies),
  • item (account elements),
  • value unit
  • time period.

In line with SNA 1993 recommendations, output values are expressed,
whenever possible, at basic prices. That is, subsidies on products have been
added to and taxes on products (other than VAT) have been subtracted from
producer priced-based output.

The database covers the 30 OECD Member countries. In addition, aggregates covering the European Union (EU-15) and the Euro Zone (EUR-11 until end 2000. From 01 January 2001 EUR-12) are provided. The data covers the years 1995 to 2003.

Concerning OECD's newest Member countries (Mexico, the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Korea), a particular effort has been undertaken to include them progressively in the Economic Accounts for Agriculture framework. As
can be seen from the table, visible progress has been made, but much still
remains to be done.

Data are submitted directly to the OECD by most non-EU OECD Member
countries and are published without any further changes. For the non-EU
OECD Member countries Unites States and Canada, data are transmitted from
USDA and Statistic Canada. Data for the fifteen European Union (EU)
countries are transmitted to the OECD by Eurostat.
