PreventionWeb (www.preventionweb.net) is a new information service created to increase knowledge on disaster risk reduction. The website provides a common tool for those interested or working in the area of disaster risk reduction to connect, exchange experiences and share information.
The site is a project of the secretariat of the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction.
PreventionWeb is designed specifically to assist professionals involved in developing national disaster risk reduction platforms or in carrying out the Hyogo Framework for Action at the country level. Other target audiences include practitioners who transfer disaster risk reduction knowledge to populations at risk, researchers working on specific disaster reduction issues, international organisations involved in capacity development and programme support for national and regional disaster risk reduction, donor country representatives wanting to understand who is doing what where and analyse the gaps in coverage, non-specialists, the general public, journalists, and professionals that are new to the subject.
The site provides the following information, including audio and video content:

news and announcements from partners in disaster risk reduction, launches of disaster reduction initiatives, major meetings and publications, and success stories;

reference documents, national policy and reports, a DRR bibliography, terminology for disaster reduction, and data and statistics, in addition to links to available country profiles;

information filtered by hazard type and thematic issues;

a DRR contact directory, training and events, academic programmes, and job openings related to disaster reduction;

forthcoming: fact sheets and an education materials database.
In addition, visitors to the PreventionWeb site can subscribe to a number of networks or online communities, including the Children, Youth and Disasters Network, the Disaster Risk Reduction Education Network, and the Gender and Disaster Network (www.preventionweb.net/english/professional/networks/).
Users can contribute disaster risk reduction related content online (www.preventionweb.net/english/submit) and subscribe to disaster risk reduction news, documents and publications, podcast interviews with people in DRR, academic programmes, jobs, and events by RSS (www.preventionweb.net/english/rss/) or by e-mail alert (www.preventionweb.net/english/email/).
