Portugal: Ambassador, Permanent Representative to the OECD

Mr. Eduardo FERRO RODRIGUES

Mr. Ferro Rodrigues was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1949.  He graduated in 1972 in Economics from the “Instituto Superior de Ciências Económicas e Financeiras – ISCEF” in Lisbon.

Prior to entering politics, Mr. Ferro Rodrigues was a professor of economics at the “Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e Empresas” - ISCTE. He held the chair in Portuguese economy and was vice-coordinator of the Economic Department.  He was also senior manager of the Group for Basic Industrial Studies at the Ministry of Planning.

From 1986 to 1987, he held the position of labour and social security spokesperson for the main opposition party. From 1987 to 1991, he was a member of the National Secretariat of the Socialist Party responsible for social and macroeconomic issues. He was elected to the Parliament (“Assembleia da República”) in 1991. From 1992 to 1994 he was a member of the Political Commission of the Socialist Party. Since 1994, Mr. Ferro Rodrigues has been member of the National Secretariat of the Socialist Party responsible for social and macroeconomic issues.

On several occasions Mr. Ferro Rodrigues has been entrusted with ministerial portfolios: Minister for Solidarity and Social Security (1995 to 1997); Minister for Labour and Solidarity (1997 to 2001); Minister for Social Infrastructures, Transportation, Housing and Communication (2001 to 2002).

Mr. Ferro Rodrigues held the position of Secretary General of the Socialist Party from 2002 to 2004 and member of the State Council (the highest advisory body to the President). From 2004 until his appointment as Permanent Representative of Portugal to the OECD, Mr. Ferro Rodrigues was Member of Parliament and Chair of the Portuguese delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.


Ambassador Ferro Rodrigues took up his post at the OECD on 3 November 2005.
