Conference on Insurance Regulation in Latin America

4-8 September 2000 - Oaxaca , Mexico

The Conference on Insurance Regulation and Supervision in Latin America was held in Oaxaca, Mexico, on 6-8 September 2000, co-organised by the OECD, the IAIS and the Association of Insurance Supervisors in Latin America (ASSAL). This conference was the first OECD meeting ever held on insurance issues in Latin America, reflecting an expansion of the OECD policy dialogue in this field of work. The conference was held in the framework of the activities of the OECD Insurance Committee under the Centre for Co-operation with Non-Members programme, sponsored by the Government of Japan. The conference was back to back with the ASSAL XI Annual Meeting held on 4-5 September, both of which were hosted by the Insurance and Surety National Commission (CNSF) of Mexico.

The conference was very successful, gathering more than 100 participants both from the public and private sectors. There was a broad consensus among participants that the co-operation between OECD and Latin American countries in the area of insurance should be deepened in the coming years. Participants came from 14 Member countries (Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States) and 16 non-Member countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela).

The ASSAL XI Annual Meeting and the Conference on Insurance Regulation and Supervision in Latin America were opened by the remarks made by Mr. Takahiro Yasui, Principal Administrator, Directorate for Financial, Fiscal and Enterprise Affairs, OECD, Mr Hanley Clark, Chairman of the IAIS, Mr Manuel Aguilera, President of the ASSAL, Mr Jose Murat Casab, Governor of Oaxaca, and Mr Jose Angel Gurria, Head of the Treasury Secretary.
