2008  – Conference on Patent Statistics for Policy Decision Making  

Vienna, 3-4 September 2008

Organised by the EPO and the OECD, in cooperation with DIME Network of Excellence, Eurostat, JPO, NSF, USPTO and WIPO

The goal of this conference was to reflect recent advances in the area of analysis with patent statistics. It aims at gathering original analytical investigations, which build on recent data and address policy relevant questions in the areas of innovation and S&T, such as the diffusion of technology, patenting activity by universities, and links between technology, entrepreneurship and markets. The programme is available here.

2008 – Workshop on Harmonisation of Applicants’ Names in Patent Data

Organised by the OECD

Attributing a patent to the individual entity which own them is a key step in many statistical and analytical work using patents. The purpose of the workshop was to exchange experiences on the harmonisation of applicants’ names in patent data and to promote convergence and co-ordination to make datasets compatible across countries and endeavours. The agenda, summary record and presentations are available here.

2007 – Conference on Patent Statistics for Policy Decision Making

Venice, 2-3 October 2007
Organised by the OECD and the EPO

Gathering and interpreting patent data is of critical importance to policymakers, statisticians and analysts working on innovation and related polices. This conference discussed the latest tools available for providing patent statistics, for example databases which match companies with inventors, provide licensing information, index scientific publications or provide technological classifications. The programme and abstracts of the presentations are available here.

2006 – Workshop on Patent Statistics for Policy Decision-Making

Vienna , 23-24 October 2006

Organised by the EPO and the OECD, with the support of the EC, JPO, NSF, USPTO, WIPO

The conference featured presentations of state-of-the-art patent statistics: new databases, indicators, and policy-oriented analysis making use of patent statistics. A broad range of experts from Europe, Japan and the United States, from academia, from patent offices and from international organisations participated in the workshop. 2004 – Workshop on the Use of Patent Statistics, Geneva

11-12 October 2004
Organised by WIPO and the OECD, with the support of the EC, EPO, NSF, JPO and USPTO

The workshop focused on both empirical analysis and statistical issues, covering the following themes: spillovers and diffusion of knowledge ; value of patents ; new ways of using patent data to address policy issues ; forecasting patent data ; future developments regarding patent data and indicators. The programme and presentations are available here.

2003 – Workshop on Statistics in the Patent Field, Geneva

18-19 September 2003
Organised by WIPO and the OECD

The workshop provided an opportunity to bring together producers and users of patent statistics to discuss the current state of the art in patent statistics, identify and discuss user needs and determine how the quality and availability of statistics could be improved to better meet user requirements.
