OECD Science, Technology and Industry Scoreboard 2003

The Science, Technology and Industry (STI) Scoreboard 2003 brings together the latest internationally comparable data on trends in the knowledge-based economy. It is the sixth edition of a series spanning a decade and brings together over 200 indicators, many of them new to this edition. The Web book edition, Web Scoreboard 2003, which includes a data appendix and links to the underlying data for all graphs and figures is available here.

The indicators cover four key areas, notably the creation and diffusion of knowledge; the information society; economic globalisation; and productivity and economic structure. As in previous editions, the Scoreboard combines the core OECD indicators on research and development, human resources in science and technology, the spread of information technology in OECD economies; the role of multinational enterprises; and the structure of OECD economies.

Many of the indicators are new and are intended to address emerging policy issues. They include indicators on the international mobility of researchers and scientists; innovation as measured by patent families; the emergence of new technologies, such as biotechnology and nanotechnology; the role of non-OECD countries in global science and innovation; the use of information technology by firms and households; productivity growth in OECD countries; and firm turnover.

With the essential findings presented in bullet points and methodological notes on indicators and data sources, this publication combines statistical rigour with easy access and readability. An electronic version makes individual sections, an elaborate data appendix and links to the underlying databases readily available. The electronic version also gives users “clickable” access to the data used in charts and figures.

The STI Scoreboard is designed to be easily accessible to users and applies a standard format for each topic, consisting of figures that present the indicators, bullet points that identify the key findings, a methodological box that provides background about the data, and a statistical annex that provides the raw data.

The STI Scoreboard is available in a printed edition, as an electronic book, and – for the second time – as a Web book that gives users on-line access to the Excel spreadsheets containing the data used in charts and figures.
